SBK has co-directed a 5-week collaborative workshop and leadership training for teens in Hudson called Social Justice Leadership Academy (SJLA ) for the past three summers. The objective of SJLA is to support young people to identify and understand issues affecting their lives, and to take leadership as crucial change-makers within their communities. 15 graduates of the program applied to return this summer as Youth Staff.
- SBK co-hosts a year-round, youth-led after school program, called Space 101 , for local teens to explore their own interests on their own terms. Initiatives the youth have organized range from music production to healthy sexuality and queer youth solidarity.
- SBK serves as Volunteer Advocates and Mentors for “at-risk youth” to prevent their being fed from schools into the prison system.
- SBK Influenced the Hudson School Board to change the district’s policy regarding minority youth referrals to Probation (PINS), which reduced formal referrals by 99%.
